Today was my one kid free day of the week. I know I am very lucky to get a kid free day, most mums out there don’t. My mother in law (well technically ex-mother in law I guess) takes Noah to play group on Tuesday mornings and they then keep him for the rest of the afternoon until they collect the big two from school and they then head over to their dads for the night.
After a quick run around to the bank, post office and grocery store I headed home and dedicated the afternoon to arty business. I felt like drawing faces for a change. I completed one little abstractly painting and then began a stylized portrait of Charlee.
I was inspired by the work of Abbey McCulloch who is an Australian artist and one of my favorites. Her paintings of woman from vogue magazines are amazing. You can watch a video interview with her about her work over here.
Anyway, I decided to try and create a similar style portrait of Charlee, it is actually really difficult to achieve that fine line between likeness and cartoon. Anyway, I will work on it a bit more as I’m still not happy with the way her mouth looks.
It’s nice to explore different techniques and even the oldest artists around learnt their skills by copying the “masters” of their time. It’s a really good way of stepping out of your comfort zone and exploring new techniques and possibilities. I want to get started on the painting part tomorrow if Noah will let me.

Wow! That really does look like Charlee!!! You are so talented and I am glad to hear Ruth gives you a break. It would be good for her, David and Noah too.
